super meat boy

i drew the above image for a hidden part of edmund and tommy’s super meat boy (see if you can find it!). i also contributed jill from mighty jill off! she makes sense there because meat boy is conceptually the same game: they’re both about the experience of replaying difficult scenarios until you become capable of overcoming them. in mighty jill off, that’s contextualized as a relationship between the protagonist, a masochistic bottom, and the antagonist, a sadistic domme.

meat boy, on the other hand, creates visual continuity between failed plays to make the player conscious of her repeated attempts at overcoming a stage. there’s the blood trail meat boy leaves behind, which permanently stains his previous paths through the stage, as well as his place of death (frequently, the sawblades pictured). even better, when the player finally succeeds, she gets to watch a replay of all her attempts simultaneously, all but one of which run to their deaths by sawblade, salt or laser. it’s an effective way of visualizing the time and labor the player has spent overcoming the stage.

are you trying to make it appear to FUTURE READERS that you corrected the oversight in my original post by providing the link i would later update my post to include?

OR DID YOU JUST NOT CLICK ON ANYTHING?

Alex, you’re not a nerd then, spending most (95%?) of your free time trolling indie game blogs, indie games and indie game devs? That’s like, totally socially acceptable behavior. I bet that’s how you introduce yourself too. “Yeah, I’m still at uni, but I have a really interesting internet persona. Basically I diss people”

Lol, have you played the game yet Alex? It’s incredibly fun, and just the right amount of challenging. Hardly qualifies as a cookie-cutter platformer, I haven’t played something that controls this smooth in ever.

Basically, if your only complaint is that the game’s ascetic is “hip” then go fuck yourself.

Yes, I have played the game. It’s terrible.

Thoughtless design in the levels, just “oh look it is difficult”, with stupid terrible ZANY internet humor, including other indie game characters so you can say “oh look, that character is from another (usually better) game and he is in this game too!! who gives a fuck!!” and a mechanical forced “tribute” to retro games in the form of pixel areas and fake error screens. It’s a disgusting, terrible game manufactured to appeal to the current terrible nerd culture and anyone who likes it is fucking retarded.

You know what? There wasn’t really any justification for what I just said. The game may not be my kind of game, but of course enjoying a video game does not mean that you have any kind of impaired mental ability.

Did you do any of the level designs or tilesets for the Warp Zone / Minus World stages? I thought I read somewhere that some of the other devs like yourself did some of those stages…
