playthisthing interviews jesse venbrux, fails to ask interesting questions

jesse venbrux is one of the designers i most admire, exploring persistence in games (often in unexpected ways) and subverting traditional expectations for player goals. wouldn’t it be amazing to hear him talk about any of this? what this is is a missed opportunity.

jesse isn’t a big studio developer, and playthisthing isn’t the mainstream games press. there’s no reason for softball questions like “what’s your favorite nintendo game?” i appreciate the words spent on pointing out jesse’s work and existence to a potentially unfamiliar audience, but what i’d really like is to hear one of the most interesting and progressive designers of our time talk about craft.

jesse does acknowledge a similiar frustration with the lack of deeper investigation at his game design school: it is a frustration i know well.
